Rock Mosaic Wall Art

Artist’s Statement
Being retired, I am working harder than ever creating Rock Mosaics. I enjoy having others see the beauty of my work. Things of beauty stand out, as assembly-line products do not!
Biography
I spent twenty years teaching electronics at a technical college while also enjoying my hobbies of woodworking, lapidary and art. My daughters and I have spent over ten years developing the process of inlaying cut stones into exquisite mosaic works of art which we have built into a business. Mosaic Stone Art taps into the beautiful colors and patterns of nature. ‘Pietra Dura’ is the term for the process of fitting intricate slices of stone to form pictorial scenes and geometric patterns. The technique first appeared in Rome in the 16th century. We first select a picture to immortalize, then select the stones with the right color, patterns and light refraction, most often quartz and sodalite. The stones are then cut into thin slices with a diamond saw, then laid in place. Once the design is completed, the back is covered in fiber-glass cloth and epoxy. The front is finished in clear plastic. The frames are handmade with red or yellow oak.
