Oil and Pastel Paintings
I love to paint. To me, there are few things better than being outside with my dog, camera and paint supplies. I am very attracted to wild places with dramatic light effects. Looking around through the view finder of my camera helps me to find a subject that thrills me enough to want to take a picture of it.
I paint in oil, but mostly with pastel because it offers immediate gratification. The colors are saturated and instant. There is no drying time, so what you put down on the paper is what you get. I use Wallis paper, a sanded paper that can take whatever I dish out. I start with a sketch, which helps me get to know the subject intimately, and really see what I’m going to paint. If I’m not totally sold on what I’ve chosen, I try different formats or do more thumbnail sketches to see if small changes would be helpful to the overall feeling I’m trying to capture.
