Papercarving

“Papercarving” is the word I use to describe my intricately cut and glued paper pieces. Working with paper is the most fun I’ve had making art. Most of my pieces have a story to tell, I guess as a result of having worked as an illustrator.

I graduated with a degree in illustration from California State University at Long Beach and have been a freelancer since then.

One of my first jobs was for Surfing Magazine. I illustrated poems for boogie board creator, Tom Morey.

In the early ‘80’s, I began to play around with paper, making paper buildings into a village for the family mantel.  In the early ‘90’s I started “painting” using different colors of paper and then began to frame the finished pieces. Most of my pieces are made up of hundreds to thousands of intricately hand cut bits of paper, using only an Exacto Knife, Toothpick Rulers, Elmer’s Glue and Hole Punches.  I don’t use magnification, just my reading glasses and good light.

Papercarving is the one type of art that I feel the most creative making.
