Linda Bourne

My pottery is a constant exploration of shape, design and color. I design asymmetrical shapes that suggest movement. I strive to make each piece whimsical and beautiful, often creating shapes that suit certain kinds of flowers from the garden.

I use the ancient art of Nerikomi, a technique that makes colored clay with high fire colorants. This colored clay is rolled into the white stoneware clay slabs that begin each piece and then decorated by random layering or specific patterns. I will often add texture. I like to leave the outside of the vases and pitchers unglazed, giving them a matte finish that emphasizes the connection of each clay piece to the earth. I glaze the inside and the handles so that they are smooth and will hold water or other liquid.

I received a Graphic Design degree from Portland State University. I have been a member of Oregon Potters Association for many years, served as president in 2013, and was in Ceramic Showcase for over 25 years. My pottery is included in two books, Hand Built Ceramics by Kathy Triplett and 500 Pitchers, a Lark book.
